Cardinal Stage is the first theatre company in Indiana to receive the prestigious National Theatre Company Grant from the American Theatre Wing (the organization that administers the Obie and Tony Awards). “This grant recognizes Cardinal in the national theatre arena and shows our viability and sustainability as a significant company,” says Cardinal’s board president, Caroline Dowd-Higgins. In Nick Dear’s contemporary adaptation of Frankenstein, the Creature confronts his Creator in a morally nuanced, existential variation of the “monster story.” Cardinal Stage Company founder Randy White returns to Bloomington to direct the show and notes that the play’s “focus on the Creature as Other” gives it power and relevance — and dovetails with Indiana University’s Themester on Diversity, Difference, and Otherness.
