House Enrolled Act 1608 bans instruction in human sexuality in kindergarten through third grade — which, according to teachers and administrators, has not been taught. It also requires schools to inform a parent within five business days if a student asks to be called by a different name or pronoun. “This has been an excessive burden on our school administrators,” says Hauswald, the MCCSC superintendent. “It’s unnecessary, and it seems mean-spirited.” | Photo by Garrett Ann Walters
